Five Years After, Mobile Hologram

Phone with speaker's face on the screen has become a reality. Five years into the future, maybe not just video, but even form the recipient in the form of three-dimensional holograms that are emitted from the surface of the screen.

That is one of five forecasts of the investigators International Business Machines (IBM) Corp.. Some other ideas is a battery technology that can 'breathe', which only need to interact with the environment to collect kinetic energy. Moreover, they predict that innovation will be developed is a computer program that can show when and where congestion occurs, information systems environment through sensors installed in cars and cell phones, and the use of the power source from the blast of hot server computer.

The predictions are part of IBM's annual tradition to find the five ideas that technology can be applied in the next five years. For the largest computer services provider in the world like IBM, it is not a speculation. They are one of the few companies that invest in research projects long term. IBM has a research center in Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California.

"The list is open the window for development of IBM's innovation engine," said Josephine Cheng, Vice President IBM Almaden lab. IBM to invest 5.8 billion dollars for research and development last year. That number represents 6.1 percent of IBM revenue. Competitors, Hewlett Packard Co., spends 2.4 percent of its revenues to research last year.

Will Robots Clean Up Future Oil Spills

Cleaning oil spills can be costly business. If eco-friendly robots can take over and clean all the mess it will be good for marine life and humans too. MIT is developing Seaswarm robots that will utilize a special substance to absorb and collect oil from the sea surface. If everything turns out well, these robots can be used commercially in a year. These robots work best collectively. They can detect the oil spills on their own and then convey the message to their robotic group and chalk out a strategy among themselves to clean the mess.

Design of a Seaswarm:
Assaf Biderman supervised this project at MIT. He is also the associate director of MIT’s Senseable City Lab. According to him the $20,000 robots will be put on exhibition in Venice, Italy. The Seaswarm robots give the appearance of a conveyor belt of a treadmill. The conveyer belt contains material which the MIT guys call a paper towel for oil spills. It can absorb up to 20 times its weight in oil. This belt floats on the sea surface and connected to an ice cooler. When it turns the belt pushes the robots frontward and absorbs the oil with the aid of a nanomaterial. This nanomaterial is designed to attract oil and repel water. Biderman explains it as a carpet rolling on the surface of the water.

How Seaswarm works:
After soaking up the oil on the sea surface the robot can burn it on the spot or it can leave the oil in a bag which can be collected later. The heater is located on the “ice cooler” part of the body. The oil stored in the bag can be reused. According to Biderman, robots are good team players. They coordinate with one another with the help of GPS location data. They devise a strategy to clean up the mess in an effective way.

Advantages of Seaswarm:
Cost effective: If the Seaswarm robots are being deployed at the oil spill site they prove to be relatively cheap, quick and effective at cleaning up oil spills. Otherwise cleaning oil spills is quite costly as it need big ships and trained crews in large numbers. Biderman is of the opinion that if the Seaswarm robots would have been used at the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster, the robots would have cleaned up the oil in two months. The cost of the whole operation would have amounted to $100 million to $200 million. If we care to look at the statistics about 800 skimming boats were in service to clean up the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster. It would have needed only 5,000 to 10,000 of MIT’s autonomous robots to complete the same task.

Eco Friendly: The Seaswarm robots use clean and green solar energy. They need only 100 watts of power, or about that of a bright light bulb for their operations. You can utilize them on sea for months and they won’t ask for overtime for working incessantly.

Stability: Biderman says, “Because it (conveyor belt) adheres to the surface of the water, it cannot capsize,” he said, “So it can withstand quite severe weather. Imagine this like a leaf that lands on the surface of the water and moves with the waves and the currents and cannot be flipped over.” The robots can work under extreme conditions and rough weather. Biderman said MIT’s oil-sopping robot would be most effective in situations like the recent oil disaster, where oil is spread out.

Damage can be confined to a smaller area: Biderman shares his opinion, “Ideally, when spillage happens, the best thing to do is to contain it right where the spillage occurs. But quite often the oil goes out of containment, and this is where this technology would be most effective.”

Snakebot, Snake Robot That Can Sing

After the mobile robot cockroaches that could make someone ran. Now comes the snake robot that can be wrapped around trees like a real snake.

Robot named Snakebot made by Biorobotics Lab at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Pittsburgh, United States. Snakebot able to coil around themselves on poles, trees and walking into the pipe vertically.

Snakebot a snaking run even able to shake its tail in the tree, looking around him through the head contains a camera and even more amazing snakebot able to sing the national anthem of the U.S. 'Star-Spangled Banner' that made him get the nickname 'Uncle Sam'.

Snakebot robot apparently has been used in disaster training and are expected to someday be able to search and rescue operation in the field condition which does not allow people to enter it.

Modular robot is built from segments of sensors and actuators that enable it to alter the length and easy to be assembled again.

Researchers at CMU noted that in the experiment to climb trees, new Snakebot can climb on tree trunks with a certain width.

"The investigators worked to design, build and program a robot. But much remains to be repaired so that the robot was able to climb trees higher with various sizes of trees and to facilitate navigation of the branch and cable," said the Carnegie Mellon University.

Coal Emissions from U.S. Could Stop in 20 Years

Quoted from journal Environmental Science and Technology (ES and T), Pushker Kharecha and his colleagues believe that we should follow some practical methods to do away with coal and conventional fossil fuel emissions. We all know that use of fossil fuels leads towards carbon emissions that cause immense damage to our environment.

They say, “The only practical way to preserve a planet resembling that of the Holocene (today’s world) with reasonably stable shorelines and preservation of species is to rapidly phase out coal emissions and prohibit emissions from unconventional fossil fuels such as oil shale and tar sands.” This group includes scientists, engineers, and architects. They are from NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, the Columbia University Earth Institute, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and 2030 Inc./Architecture 2030.

They believe that United States could totally stop emissions of carbon dioxide from coal-fired electric power plants. It is not a tall talk but can be achievable within 20 years. To achieve this target one doesn’t have to depend on some miracle or God send technology. This can be done by using technology that already exists or could be commercially viable within a decade.

The authors suggested some strategies to make that phase-out possible. They ask for elimination of subsidies for fossil fuels. They also suggest about putting rising prices on carbon emissions. They also want major improvements in electricity transmission. They want the utilization of power in the homes, commercial buildings, and appliances to be judicious and efficient. This team is also suggesting for the replacement of coal power with biomass, geothermal, wind, solar, and third-generation nuclear power. Pushker Kharecha and colleagues also want that if nuclear power plants are a success at commercial levels then we should opt for the deployment of advanced (fourth-generation) nuclear power plants. They also advocate of the methods of carbon capture and storage at remaining coal plants.

WiGig 10-fold speed WiFi

WiFi technology proved to reliably transmit data over the Internet wirelessly. Velocity was higher. Although currently only a matter Mbps, or megabits per second, forward velocity can reach 10 times the current speed or scale Gbps.

WiFi Alliance, which is a technology developer organization has joined the Wireless Gigabit Ethernet Alliance (WiGig) to reach the target earlier. One of the benefits of high speed data transmission that is able to replace the cables to transmit HD video formats from one device to another. For example, from Blu-ray player or camera directly to your TV.

"This technology may be available for another two years," said Kelly Davis-Felner, marketing director WiFi Alliance, as reported by AP, on Monday (5/10/2010). It was driven by the market demand of multimedia content which is now richer.

Currently, a number of the consortium's technology center shoulder to shoulder to develop similar technology. Previously, another group calling wirelessHD Consortium is also developing similar technologies WiGig. Many companies are incorporated in this second consortium, such as Samsung, Panasonic, and Toshiba.

Anticipation in 2012, Build Doomsday Bunker

Although denied by many astronomers about the possibility of Judgement due to asteroid impacts in the year 2012, a company from the United States remains prepared a shelters or bunkers. Companies that try to take advantage of people's fears it offers a refuge from the Resurrection.

Vivos, a U.S. company based in California said they are planning a business project that offers a better life expectancy of an event is approaching mass destruction, as we are told many people about the Mayan prediction that is expected to occur in 2012.

Vivos said it plans to build 20 units of protection bunkers throughout the United States. Every bunker that each area 1858 square meters can accommodate up to 200 people. Bunker will be designed to withstand heat up to 700 degrees Celsius, wind speed 700 kilometers per hour, flooding during the 500 hours, even seismic waves which numbered more than 10 Ritchter Scale.

To build any shelter, Vivos predict the cost of 10 million U.S. dollars with a shelter facility, food, fuel, water, clothing, medical supplies, and security system in it. For those of you who are interested in ordering tickets bunkers, ready to spend just 50 thousand dollars.

"This really is not about 2012," said Robert Vicino, Vivos owners. "Everything can happen tomorrow or 20 years from now. You can not predict, but you can prepare," wrote the company's ads on its site.

LED Abandoned, Replaced by LCD 3D

Technology trends Light emitting diode (LED) on the LCD TV will slowly becoming obsolete with newer technology.
By mid-next year, Director of Sales, LG Electronics Indonesia Budi Setiawan said, LED technology is becoming obsolete and would welcome the 3D technology in the LCD TV. And, LG is ready bringing the first products in July.

Sony Corp. did not want to miss. Multinational electronics company from Japan is also going to launch LCD TV 3D technology in Tokyo in June. Unfortunately, no further information relating launch in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia.

Scheduled next June 10, Sony immediately release two different variants based on the size of LCD TV for the first 3D technology. That is, LED 46-inch LX900 and 40 inches. However, for the price, you might say very premium, U.S $ 3875 and U.S $ 3,000.

March 9, 2010, Panasonic Corp. also plans to launch a 3D LCD TV in the United States. Even to strengthen its sales, the producer who also came from Japan is holding Best Buy as an online and offline retailers.

However, Samsung Electronics became the first manufacturer to introduce this 3D technology globally. The reason, manufacturers of electronic devices from South Korea is being marketed ranks first 3D LCD TV in South Korea.
Samsung started producing LED and LCD panels compatible to 40 inches, 46 inches and 55 inches with Full HD 3D display 3D Active Glasses technology.

Based on data obtained by DisplaySearch, the 3D display market is expected to grow from U.S. $ 902 million in 2008 to U.S. $ 22 billion in 2018. Special 3D TV market, DisplaySearch estimates that the market will expand to U.S. $ 17 billion, with sales increasing from 200,000 units in 2009 to 64 million units in 2018 to come.

The Brain Testing

The human brain is probably the most complicated organ in the human body. I say complicated because physically the brain is made up of millions of crisscrossing nerves which carry billions of neurons here and there. It is amazing to even wonder how this intricate jungle of mass information works! It is a fact that scientists can explain most of the actions performed by the brain or stimulated by the brain and can trace the origins of the action to a tiny nerve hidden in the neurotic jungle or they can even zero in to the last neuron which fired the action process. But the fact remains we are still unable to comprehend the full potential of the human brain due to the fact that the human brain has not been goaded or stimulated enough to realize its full powers.

What caused newton or einstein to do the things they did? where they made different from the common man and were their chemical and electrical processes in their brain charged up better than the others that they could deliver so much with their brain powers? How were their brains stimulated better that they had a much higher average when it came to analyzing, researching and finding solutions to complex problems that most of us humans never even knew existed ? is it possible that some humans had better cerebral capabilities than others? was it fair if they did or can there be ways to impove the brain power of every child and adult that a world with a human race that is truly equal in every sense of the word be created? can we create a world full of super achieving human beings?
These questions must have lingered in the minds of the members of the scientific and neurotechnology community for a ling time and answers to these questions have slowly been unraveled in the last decade. Advancement in science especially in the field of neuro science has enabled scientists and researchers alike to understand the brain a little more now. These people have found out that it was indeed possible for a human being to maximize the potential of his or brain. It is possible now they say to stimulate the brain in such a manner that the productiion capacity of the brain is significantly invreased but this requires a little bit of assistance through external means.
keeping in line with the developments, many neurotechnology companies have come up with important breakthroughs that promise much in the field of brain power enhancement. They say every child can be moded into a bright adult with the aid of proper stimulating exercises for the brain and every adult can be transformed into better productive hubs with the help of similar exercises. These exercises can be in the form of audio visual stimulation, simple "brain testing" exercises and through the use of software such as memory stimulating software.
Memory stimulating software helps your brain to improve its own capabilities by testing it by a series of well researched and designed brain testing exercises. These exercises stimulate the brain to improve its functional ability through constant practice. This is much similar to how an athlete trains his body to perform physical actions better through constant practice. The brain too has to be challenged to perform better and goaded into pushing the limits. Brain enhancement is an ongoing process which should never stop and the vital faculties of a human brain can be prolonged to function optimally if the brain is continously tested, challenged and forced into giving better results and if every single man and woman really optimizes their brain powers, then this world will see a race of super intelligent, high performing human beings.
